Gong Chenyu

Gong Chenyu, born in 1988 in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang, graduated from the Department of Sculpture, China Academy of Art, with a BFA in 2012 and from the Department of Oil Painting with an MFA in 2015. He currently lives and works in Hangzhou.Gong Chenyu’s creation always starts from individual narrative, whether it is the orderly grasp of surrounding objects in the “Display” or the reconstruction of gods in different contexts in the “idol” series, all aim to extract a transformation based on the painting language itself on the basis of text and images. After the epidemic, artists’ creations gradually returned to anthropological and ethnographic research related to their birthplace in the Heilongjiang River Basin, rather than depicting scenes from elsewhere. The shift towards perspective and the flow of identity in works constantly reveal the ambiguous, contradictory, and ambiguous core of will in human nature. Between consciousness, departure, and return from contemplation, the artist’s ability to perceive the world is continuously enhanced.
