HPB LIX Yuna Yu: The Serpent Archive

Yuna Yu
Yuna Yu (b. 1997) was born in Chengdu and has lived and studied in Toronto, Beijing, and London since she was fourteen. Her cross-regional experiences have prevented her from forming a single cultural identity; instead, she has developed a unique, fluid subjectivity shaped by constant displacement. Using mythological themes, medieval artifacts, and historical archives as mediums, she stitches together individual memory and collective human history, creating an image language that both incorporates Eastern cultural elements and reflects a global citizen’s perspective. Drawing from her personal experience of the blurred and complex nature of identity in the context of globalization, she employs “displacement” as a creative method. Her works, shaped by her sensitivity to different cultural contexts, display extended and drifting visual characteristics.
