Lu Nan
For Lu Nan, photography is a way of responding directly to the object, an art form that gets to the essence. As he puts it: “I take every photograph with a humble heart. I de-ambiguate as much as possible, so that the essence is conveyed in the most fundamental way, in a way that is better understood, or in a way that appeals to people, in a way that moves them.” Beginning in 1989, Lu Nan spent 15 years completing his trilogy: The Forgotten People, On the Road and The Four Seasons. The trilogy as one large work establishes photography as a way of seeing through the epic form and is an important contribution by Lu Nan. Each image in the trilogy can be separate, yet indivisible. They expand and extend each other in a crystallised way, with each individual moment belonging to all of them at the same time through the ‘experience’ of time. The trilogy focuses on the human condition on a threefold level of life. The tangled particles of light and shadow, alluding to a heightened moral sensibility, lead the viewer’s gaze ultimately to the obscured world of our own hearts.
