Liu Lu

Born in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province in 1991, Liu Lu received her MFA in Oil Painting from the China Academy of Art in 2017, currently lives and works in Hangzhou. Liu Lu’ s composite approach to abstract painting draws from the underlying meta-logic of mediums such as video and photographic art. Taking the visual concept of “superimposition” as a point of departure, Liu internalizes the nocturnal phenomena of the city through her photographic practice, translating them into a distinct visual language and a personal symbolic system which she then gives form to. The overlapping and juxtaposition of surface imagery in Liu Lu’ s paintings continuously simulate the estranged sensory conditions of our present era defined by informational acceleration and overexposure. By focusing on the metaphysical coexistence of the external tangible world—documented from disparate dimensions of time and space—and an inward contemplation of the self, Liu’ s works have unveiled a spatial inquiry into the non-empirical realm that lies beyond phenomenal appearances accessible to direct experience.
