Hive Center for Contemporary Art was founded by XIA Jifeng in Beijing in 2013. A metaphor for the existence of humanity’s aggregated mode of living and the multiplicity of its mind, the name ‘hive’ corresponds to the current state of social structure and contemporary art. Hive celebrates a roster of established and emerging talents from diverse backgrounds and contexts. As one of the largest and leading contemporary art galleries in China, Hive is dedicated to contributing to the development and cultivation of contemporary Chinese art, as well as its global promotion and exchange while introducing our community to outstanding international artists and projects.
Hive Center for Contemporary Art operates three spaces in Beijing and Shanghai. Situated in China’s distinguished 798 Art Zone, Hive Beijing covers approximately 4000m2 of a converted old industrial building, featuring five standard exhibition spaces and a lobby for events, with bent and long-span structure of 8 to 11 metres in height in the main exhibition space.
To mark the gallery’s tenth anniversary in 2023, Hive Center for Contemporary Art opened two new locations, Hive Shanghai and Hive Becoming, in architectural landmarks in Shanghai’s historic Bund area. Hive Shanghai is located in the First Trust Co. Building at 270 Beijing East Road, once considered as the financial street of the Chinese capital. The First Trust Co. Building was originally built in 1924 and designed by the then-renowned British firm Atkinson & Dallas Architects and Civil Engineers Ltd. Combining neoclassical and modernist styles, it once served as the headquarters of the First Trust Company, which conducted trust, banking, depository, and insurance business, and witnessed the century-long history of the rise and fall of China’s modern national capital and finance.
The ten-year-long programme, Hive Becoming, has also landed a dedicated gallery in heritage architecture at 211 Beijing East Road. The space at the historic building measures almost 300 square metres and is located less than 100 metres from Hive Shanghai in the First Trust Co. Building. The opening of Hive Becoming’s independent space further engages Hive in the ecological establishment of emerging artists of Asian heritage worldwide. In collaboration with the existing Becoming programme at Hive’s Beijing space, it will provide global emerging artists of Asian descent with more spaces and opportunities for exhibition, curation, and research, thus creating a sustainable dynamic for the prospective evolution of contemporary art.
