Meng Qingjun
Meng Qingjun, born in Harbin in 1997, received his MFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2024. He regards temporality as the core issue of painting. By distilling the temporal qualities inherent in Chinese calligraphy (stroke order) and borrowing a Cubist perspective to explore the sequential nature of comic panels (reading order), he develops a ritualized mode of viewing led by time. Through the pictorial surface, he ultimately seeks to reproduce this sense of temporality in pursuit of a freehand, expressive approach to painting.
In daily life, Meng adopts an almost ritualistic approach to carry out this temporal mode of seeing. Figures, still lifes, and landscapes alike become ritual offerings that awaken a sense of spirituality. This spirituality, summoned through the act of viewing, serves as the very nourishment for his painting practice. Like writing, his work records these moments of awakened spirit on the canvas—each act of ritualistic seeing becoming the source of his gesture.
